But what exactly is meant by electronic time recording, how does it differ from the digital solution and why is digital time recording the better solution? We have summarized it for you in 10 reasons.

In April 2023, Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil presented the federal government with a draft law on electronic time recording. This is the first step towards a law on working time recording and is based on a ruling by the European Court of Justice in 2019. At that time, the ECJ ruled that all European member states must pass a law on working time recording. To date, this has not happened in Germany.

The biggest difference between digital and electronic time recording is the device used to record time: Electronic time recording is usually an external device that is installed in the office - the so-called terminal. As similar as these two solutions may sound, they are also very different. We would like to give you 10 reasons why we recommend introducing a digital system over a purely electronic solution:

1. Mobility
The big difference between electronic and digital time recording is the end device: the electronic one needs a fixed terminal, which is used to clock in using a chip device; the digital one does not require a separate device at all. Because a mobile device is sufficient, it offers significantly more mobility.

In the case of digital time recording, times can therefore not only be recorded from the office, but also in the home office, on business trips and errands, or at customer appointments.

2. Costs
Electronic time recording is an external system. The purchase costs are usually high. There is also the reader that has to be installed. In addition, each employee receives their own card or chip, which also entails costs.

When it comes to digital time recording, we are simply talking about an app that is installed on the smartphone. The admin has extra access to a dashboard in the browser. This means that there is no need to spend extra money on expensive software. Instead, these programs work with a subscription system. Here, you pay per employee, month or year, and are therefore usually much cheaper.
